Lactation Support Specialists
Sutter Davis Hospital

Sutter Davis Hospital Birthing Center is one of the few hosÂpitals in the nation to be deemed a Baby-Friendly Hospital. The Baby-Friendly Hospital designation is awarded by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care and support for successful breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding offers babies the best possible start by bonding mother and newborn, providing the ideal nutrition, and strengthening a baby's immune system. Breastfeeding not only provides the perfect nutrition for babies, it also helps prevent many childhood and adult diseases. Breastfeeding is normal, desirable, and achievable according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which encourages every mother to breastfeed their infants for six months without supplements, and to continue breastfeeding for the first year and beyond.
Studies show breastfeeding can decrease conditions such as respiratory diseases, diarrhea, ear infections and bacterial meningitis, and boost intelligence. Breastfeeding may offer protection against sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), diabetes, obesity and asthma. Research indicates that breastfeeding can reduce a mother's risk of ovarian and breast cancer, hip fractures, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Breastfeeding also has the potential for decreasing health care costs, doctor's visits, and hospitalization. In the interest of improving the health of our mothers and newborns, Sutter Davis has specially trained nurses on staff daily to assist mothers and babies to breastfeed successfully.
