    Doula Program
    Sutter Davis Hospital

When requested by the expectant mother, Sutter Davis Hospital offers a special program to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to mothers during the childbirth process.

The wisdom and emotional support of experienced women at birth is an ancient tradition. Today that tradition is carried on by doulas who stay by the woman's side throughout labor, delivery and the immediate postpartum period.

Studies show that when doulas are present at birth, women have shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, fewer cesareans, healthier babies, and breastfeed longer. Recent evidence also suggests that when a doula provides labor support, women are more satisfied with their experience and the mother-infant interaction is enhanced long after the birth.

The doulas at Sutter Davis Hospital Birthing Center are trained in the physiological and emotional aspects of childbirth. They nurture the woman through one of the life's most precious events, helping to make it positive and memorable. Beyond seeing to the woman's comfort, the doula facilitates communication between the woman, her partner, and medical staff. The doula can explain what is happening during the birthing process and provide information to allow the woman to make informed decisions about her experience. Sutter Davis Birthing Center provides 24 hour doula coverage through a volunteer doula program. Check with your health care provider if you are interested in this free service. When you come to the Birthing Center in labor, or at the point in labor when you would like some support, the labor staff will call a doula for you.

Are you interested in becoming a volunteer doula?

The Sutter Davis Doula Program is administered by volunteer doulas who undergo special education and training. We greatly appreciate having prospective volunteer doulas join our labor support team. View the flyer if you are interested in becoming a volunteer doula. The next doula orientation class will be announced when the class has filled. For more information, or to enroll in the class, contact our doula coordinator, Jennifer Anderson, RN, at SDHDoula@sutterhealth.org. She will respond to your inquiries via email.
